Forest Safety Advocates are available to help you deal with your questions and to coach you to achieve better safety results. They are folks with many years experience in the forest sector in BC. They all have on-the-ground experience developing, implementing or managing health and safety programs for a variety of forest industry activities.

What do Advocates do?

Your assigned Safety Advocate will work with you to:

• Coach and mentor senior management in how to drive business success through effective safety management system leadership
• Assess your current safety program and operational practices, and help you come up with plans for improvement
• Provide hazard and risk assessment advice, including training and implementation of RADAR (a hazard identification and control process)
• Help supervisors develop on-the-ground safety leadership skills
• Assist in conducting internal serious incident investigations
• Other more specialized safety advocate services can be developed and provided on request

How much time can a Safety Advocate spend with my company?

Usually they will spend one day, but it’s possible for this to be adjusted, or for a follow up to be scheduled, depending on a company’s need. Please discuss this with your assigned Safety Advocate.

How do I access a Safety Advocate?

In order to use the services of a Safety Advocate, your company needs to be registered in the SAFE Companies Program and ready to make further commitments to safety. 

I applied for a Safety Advocate, what happens next?

Applications are handled on a first come first served basis.

Reviewed and accepted applications will be forwarded to the appropriate Safety Advocate and they will contact you to make arrangements for your session.

Please note that due to other Safety Advocate commitments or activities, there is no guarantee of immediate service. In general, expect to hear from an Advocate within two weeks of your request.

How much will it cost?

Safety Advocate Services are available at no additional charge to registered SAFE Companies.

Safety Advocate Code of Conduct

Council-provided Safety Advocates are independent service delivery contractors to the Council and to industry. They are not employees of the Council and, in most cases, will have outside safety or other business activities. As a general principle, it is inappropriate for them to mix Safety Advocate activities with their own consulting services.

To provide guidance on appropriate activities and communication, Safety Advocates must adhere to a Code of Conduct, which you can download and read here. Breaches of this Code of Conduct must be reported to the Forest Safety Council immediately in order to protect the integrity of the Safety Advocate program.
