Transporting Workers Safely Across British Columbia

Big rigs, rough roads and tough weather make driving for forestry workers and everyone who shares the roads with them a daily challenge in British Columbia.

Forestry TruckSafeWorking together to make it safer for everyone is what the Transportation Safety department does. The transportation Safety program brings workers, employers, enforcement and regulatory agencies and the public together to find solutions, talk about best practices, and share information so everyone can follow the same rules of the road.

Sharing the road and getting home safely is what it’s all about.

Resource Road Radio Channels Are Changing

The standard resource road radio communications protocol, radio channels and signs were developed by the radio communications working group, with representatives from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (including BC Timber Sales), Industry Canada, BC Forest Safety Council/Truck Safe and FPInnovations. The working group coordinated numerous meetings with forest licensees and truck drivers in developing the protocol. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations lead the implementation and evaluation of the pilot projects. Industry Canada is taking the greater lead role as implementation of the standard protocols spreads to other areas of the province.  read more »

WorkSafeBC Taking Action Following Truck Incidents

Following a number of serious incidents involving logging trucks on BC's highways and resource roads, WorkSafeBC is writing to log truck operators across the province to emphasize their concern for operator and public safety and to notify the operators of targeted inspections. Please see the attached letter and sample log truck inspection checklist for more information.

Three-Point Contact Survey – Log Haulers


Log haulers, tree planters, and fallers have the highest rates of serious falls in the forest industry. The BC Forest Safety Council is working on a project to help reduce the number of serious falls that take place each year.

New West Partnership Trade Agreement

BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan have come to an agreement in order to harmonize truck weights and dimensions regulations.

Steep Grade Descent Tools

Logging TruckWorkSafeBC regulation 26.2 and the associated Guideline 26.2-2 describe requirements / expectations that before hauling logs on steep grades (greater than 18%), a risk assessment is conducted and safe descent procedures are developed.

FP Innovations has developed two spreadsheet lookup tools that forestry planners and supervisors can use when conducting risk assessments on grades greater than 18%. One sheet is focused on off-highway fat trucks; the other looks at 6 and 7-axle configurations hauling highway legal loads. These tools provide recommended maximum payloads and speeds for specified road conditions (traction levels, grade, length of grade). Read more...
